Launch of the New Indie Point Unlimited Supply

We've modified our name for the last time and we've changed a few fonts and colors around, but it's basically the same site that attracts 2,000 regular readers a day. I took out "Stereotypical Hipster Blog" to weed out people search for "hipster blog" on blog search sites. So the only people here'll be for our content.

Ramblings: Coming Up

Sorry for the lack of posts yesterday as I had the flu. But here's what you missed:
  • Jarvis Cocker, Dinosaur Jr., Mission of Burma and The Apples in Stereo among others will join the already announced Vampire Weekend, Dizzee Rascal, !!! and Public Enemy to play this year's Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this July.
  • My local alternative rock station WBRU has gotten even more cool in the past few days: first with playing the entirety of the new Raconteurs album on Wednesday, but also they had Biffy Clyro in for an acoustic performance/interview yesterday which you can hear here and Monday they're going commercial free (brought to you by Dunkin' Donuts. Dunkin Donuts: If your in Rhode Island, throw a rock. 65% of the time you'll hit a Dunkin' Donuts).

Ramblings: Continued Insulation

  • My mp3 player has tragically stopped working. I'll still keep posting of course, but it's really inconvenient not having anything to listen to right now
  • my local alt rock radio station, WBRU, played the entirety of the new Raconteurs album Consolers of the Lonely last night. Was it awesome? Damn straight it was.
  • I just had one of those No Fear drinks. Didn't give me the caffiene and/or gaurana i needed. It tasted like watered down Mountain Dew actually

I Just had to bring this to your attention

As a few of you know, Drive-By Truckers played at the Paradise this Sunday in Boston, and as several of you know, my buddy Ben Keefe has an internet radio show on WRIU. He's just informed the members of the show's Facebook group that he was able to interview DBT and the interview will appear on this Saturday's show!

His show is on from 6PM-8PM every Saturday on WRIU's Studio B.

Around 5:45-ish on Saturday, Just follow this link and click on "Stubio B" (yes, really. it's a typo) download the .pls file and drag it to either WinAMP or iTunes (there's better instructions on the link above). If you hear reggae in your WinAMP or iTunes, you're halfway there (Studio B, when not playing its exclusive broadcasts, simulcasts WRIU), you'll hear Ben's show around 6. Don't miss it.

Universal cut three tracks from new Be Your Own Pet album

According to Pitchfork Media, three songs were removed from Get Awkward, the sophomore album by indie punk act Be Your Own Pet by Universal Media, who distrubutes the band's albums through a deal with the indie label they're signed to - Ecstatic Peace, which is owned by Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore. The three songs - "Becky", "Blow Yr Mind" and "Black Hole" are available on international releases of the album, but not on American copies. Of course the funny thing is that Universal is the record label of Marylin Manson. Yeah, remember him? And the other funny thing is that BYOP's lead singer Jemina Pearl Abegg is the daughter of a prominent Christian photographer.

Mozilla Firefox 3 is almost here!

According to Reuters, Mozilla Firefox 3 will be ready for download come a few weeks and the latest beta (the fourth revision) is available for download now. Of course it's a beta and I don't recommend its download by anyone who isn't a computer expert (I won't because I'd rather wait). More news as it comes

Elvis Costello's new album will not be issued on CD

Elvis Costello has announced that his 22nd album, Momofuku will be issued on vinyl and digital download only, which means there will be no CD for the album (Costello confirms this, but I don't expect it'll stay that way for long) The album - named after the Chinese inventor of instant noodle - will feature his backing band of the past eight years, The Imposters, and will be issued on Lost Highway Records.

Video of the Day Bonus Video: Public Image Ltd. on American Bandstand 5/17/80. No, seriously

No really. This is legendary. Dick Clark considers this one of his ten favorite American Bandstand performances. For some reason, Public Image Ltd. - who have never, ever charted in America were asked to perform (well, lip-synch - which John Lydon never comes remotely close to doing) "Poptones" and "Careering" on American Bandstand on May 17, 1980 and never let anyone forget. The video of these performances has been notoriously hard to find, but a very generous YouTube user named ElixerOfThought has posted a (low quality) video of it. The video might be low quality, but the performances preserved are priceless and is the only known version on the web. Consider this a bonus video of the day. Of course PIL weren't the only alternative rock band to somehow randomly stumble onto AB. Others include The Beastie Boys, The Boomtown Rats, Devo, R.E.M., Wall of Voodoo, Madness, Psychedelic Furs and Squeeze along with classic rock legends The Doors and the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Don't you worry, we will continue this series of awkward and totally out of place performances as we dig them up.

UPDATE (7/13/08): Oh, fuck. It's gone. God dammit.

Video of the Day: Hüsker Dü live on the Joan Rivers show in 1987

I don't quite know who decided that 80's alternative legends Hüsker Dü were the perfect musical guest for the forgotten Late Show with Joan Rivers. Here they are back in 1987 performing "Could You Be the One?" and "She's a Woman (And Now He is a Man)" from there Warehouse: Songs and Stories album, with an interview somewhere in there. Just another awkward TV moment brought to you by YouTube (i'll try to find the time Public Image Ltd. were on American Bandstand for another post)

Video of the Day: "Machine Gun" by Portishead

It's been nine years since British alternative legends Portishead released their second self-titled album. This April, the band will release Third. This is the video for the first single off the album, "Machine Gun"

UPDATE (7/13/08): So, Universal Music and Sony BMG have suddenly decieded to disable embedding of their artists' videos fearing that somehow that is "pirating". However, lucky for you, I was able to dig up a video of this song being performed live earlier this year on Later... With Jools Holland. It's at least a consolation.

Ramblings: The First Day of Spring (Already?)

  • That was fast wasn't it? Spring already. And still no Chinese Democracy (so it's just like every spring since 1994).
  • Anthony Minghella, the British film director who won an Oscar for directing 1996's The English Patient and also directed Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr. Ripley died on March 18 of a hemorrhage. He was 54.
  • The BAFTA Television Awards nominees (The British equivalent to the Emmy and the sister award to the BAFTA [the British equivalent of the Oscar]) were announced last night. Life on Mars picked up a nomination for Best Drama Series, with Family Guy, Heroes, My Name Is Earl and Californication nominated for Best International Series.

Arthur C. Clarke dead at 90

British science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, CBE died yesterday (well, actually he died today, given the time difference) in his home in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Clarke is best known for 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1968 film that he wrote with director Stanley Kubrick and based on his book of the same name that was written concurrently with the film and was partially based on his 1948 short story "The Sentinel". Other works Clarke wrote include Earthlight, Tales from the White Heart, 2010: Odyssey Two (the basis for the film 2010: The Year We Make Contact), The Songs of Distant Earth and Against the Fall of Night. Clarke had suffered from breathing problems the night before. The writer was 90.

Gnarls Barkley move album date up

Possibly in response to The Raconteurs surprise announcement yesterday, Gnarls Barkley announced they were also moving up their release date. To right now. The album was released yesterday digitally on iTunes and similar sites along with limited physical release. Next week will be the full physical release.

Raconteurs announce album to be released next week

Yesterday, Detroit rockers the Raconteurs announced the release date for their second record: Next Tuesday.

Seemingly out of nowhere, the band will release Consolers of the Lonely - the follow-up to 2006's Broken Boy Soldiers on March 25, 2008. The first single from the album, "Salute Your Solution" will also be released the same day.

Ramblings: Ramblings Ride Again

  • Radiohead have announced that the second physical single from their In Rainbows album will be "Nude". The song - which despite have been performed live since 1997, but hadn't appeared on an album until In Rainbows - will feature the b-sides "Down is the New Up" (on the CD Single) and "4 Minute Warning" (on the vinyl) according to NME. The band's first physical single off the record - "Jigsaw Falling Into Place" hit #30 on the UK Singles Chart. Despite not being issued as a single, "Bodysnatchers", an album track from In Rainbows has peaked at #8 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, their first venture into the Top 10 of that chart since "Creep" hit #3 back in 1993 (its still their biggest hit on the chart).
  • I had high hopes for the American version of beloved British automotive show Top Gear (how universal is its appeal over there? people who aren't even car nuts watch it), but its been announced that NBC has picked Adam Carolla (aka the less funny, more unibrowed one on The Man Show) as its host. It'll last under eight episodes.
  • Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Activision announced it will release a free pack of Dropkick Murphys songs for Guitar Hero III for the PS3 and XBox 360. The pack will feature "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya", "(F)lannigan's Ball" and "Famous for Nothing" all of which originate from their 2007 release The Meanest of Times.

Video of the Day: "Get Smashed Gate Crash" by Hadouken!

Leeds, England's Hadouken! are a sizable cult band in their home country, with the video for their first single "That Boy That Girl" becoming a viral hit and their second single "Liquid Lives" hitting the UK Top 40. The band's debut EP Not Here to Please You was issued last year exclusively on USB stick. Sadly in America, they're unheard of. Hopefully the fact that their major label debut drops this year should change all that. This is the official video for the first single from the grindie five pieces' Atlantic Records debut Music for An Accelerated Future.

BattleBots Set to Return to TV

BattleBots Inc, the owners of the popular BattleBots robot competition announced on their website that the show will return to the TV airwaves as soon as June 2008 on ESPN. The widly popular show ran on Comedy Central (of all places) for five seasons from 2000 to 2002, and had two non-televised competitions in 1999. It has not been announced if hosts Bill Dwyer, Sean Salisbury, Tim Green and Bill Nye would return, and nothing has been announced on the pages of alot of notable bot builders. Hopefully such fan favorites as Biohazard, Vlad the Impaler, Toro, Ziggo, Tazbot, Diesector, Dr. Inferno Jr., Deadblow and Pressure Drop will return.

Former Battlebots competitors Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (who built Blendo) currently host the Discovery Channel show Mythbusters which Deadblow builder Grant Imahara appears as apart of their build team.

Video of the Day: "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem

Hi, folks.
I still have nothing to talk about for the fifth day running (slow news week). It reminds me that my blog has basically become the Hipster version of The Soup which is what no one wants. And I'm one of only six bloggers on the planet not at South By Southwest this week. Anyway, here's a video from LCD Soundsystem. It's "All My Friends", which we here at Indie Point named Song of the Year for 2007.

Video of the Day: Drive-By Truckers on Conan O'Brien

Some other things you can do with Hulu is that you can take a select part of a show and put 'em on your blog. So mostly here that'll be performances on the various late night shows. I have a buddy of mine who loves the Drive-By Truckers, so he'll really like this. This is them performing "Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife" on Conan O'Brien on Tuesday.

THIS VIDEO IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. YEAH, LIFE SUCKS LIKE THAT.

Hulu Goes Public. Also, Lazy Sunday.

Hulu has gone public after several months in invite-only beta (I got my invite in October after a few months of trying). What's on Hulu you ask? All your favorite NBC and/or FOX shows (you do have some?) along with many from cable stations.

Your first question is "is 'Lazy Sunday' on there?"
Answer: You're damn sure it is.
In fact, here it is:

Video of the Day: "Little Lover's So Polite" by Silversun Pickups

At the time I type this, the band and/or its label Dangerbird hasn't even uploaded this to Youtube. I wrote about this video some time ago and provided a link to the video on Dangerbird's website before its TV premiere. They've since taken that link down, but they have a new link to it. This video - for "Little Lover's So Polite" - was directed by actor Joaquin Pheonix. And he does a pretty good job. "Little Lover's" is one of my favorite songs on Carnavas and it was only time before the band chose it as a single.

I Now Have 10,000 Tracks Scrobbled To Last.FM

Yup, i finally hit the big landmark of 10,000 songs scrobbled from my last.fm account since i created the account on June 16, 2007. On March 9, 2008 at 7:02 EDT, I scrobbled track #10,000, "All My Friends" by LCD Soundsystem.

These we the last ten tracks up to and including #10,000. I personally picked them out of the 845 songs I have on my computer after a long and arduous process of only including my favorite songs/favorite songs of the moment:

Bauhaus Just Released A Record. Yes, *That* Bauhaus

How in the hell did this slip under my radar? Goth rock legends Bauhaus released their first album since 1983, Go Away White on March 4. It, however, will be their last album as they disbanded for good after it's release (they reunited in 2005). This means no singles, no promotion, nada.

But from what i've heard of it, it's top form. As many of you know, 3/4 of Bauhaus also record and tour under the name Love and Rockets (who reunited in 2007) and who are best known for 1989's "So Alive", a killer song that fluked it's way into the US Top 10. There's a bit of a linger from L&A on the record (I mean the only member of the band not in L&A, Peter Murphy - who also has a top notch solo career - does put in his two cents). Go Away White is available on iTunes and on CD at some stores through Redeye Distribution.

Love and Rockets will play at the Coachella festival this year.

Video of the Day: "The Age of the Understatement" by The Last Shadow Puppets

This is the official video for the debut single by British indie duo The Last Shadow Puppets. This band consists of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane, formerly of The Rascals. Their label, Domino (also the home to the Arctics) released the video for "The Age of the Understatement" two days ago. Here it is. Enjoy the hell out of it.

Ramblings: Untitled Indiepoint Rambling Project (2008)

Hi, folks. Blogger was down for several hours today, and this was my first chance to post. Because apparently, Blogger is like that.

  • A fan-made video for "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex" by Brazilian electro band CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy) has become the most viewed video in the history of YouTube, but it took only a few days to do so, raising suspicions. I'm one of the very few people who heard of CSS before "Music..." was used in an iPod ad last year, and they are a pretty good band. But I myself am very suspicious of its sudden surge of popularity. It has been since removed from the most viewed page. I can tell you from viewing it, it is a very good video.
  • Also, has anyone heard this new song by the now exclamation-point-less Panic(!) at the Disco? I'd hate to say it but, it's a good song. It's a very good song. Who knew they had it in them huh?
  • British newspaper The Sun reports that music site musicmagpie.co.uk has named the cover for Unknown Pleasures - the 1979 debut album by Joy Division - to be the greatest of all time. It's a killer cover, but really? best of all time? Anywho, the site named the cover for the self-titled 1989 album by The Stone Roses to be #2, with perrenial winner Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd at #7, tied with the cover for David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Hey, You Know That Gnarls Barkley Video I Talked About Yesterday? See It Here!

Yes, I am one terrible person, but here it is, the video for "Run" by Gnarls Barkley. Now, like I said, this is original version and it may cause seizures in people diagnosed with epilepsy.

But here it is.

Thursday, March 6, 2008

Gnarls Barkley Video Banned from UK TV

The video for "Run", the first single from alternative rock/soul duo Gnarls Barkley has been banned from British TV for failing the Harding Test, which is something that measures if images on a televised program/commercial/video/whatever would give people seizures. The band was requested to make edits to the video so it can air on MTVUK and it's alternative/indie rock-only partner MTV2UK (yes, MTV2UK is only for alternative rock. Yes, I wish MTV2 in America played videos at all.)

Previously, the clip for "Sheena Is A Parasite" by The Horrors was banned for the same effects.

E. Gary Gygax fails fortitude save, Dies at 69.

This just in: D&D co-creator E. Gary Gygax died in home in Lake Geneva, WI, yesterday morning. He was 69. I've been playing D&D for some 10 odd years now and this was a total shock. The news was only announced today. No announcement of what he died from, but he'd been suffering from poor health for quite some time.

Hey, at least I heard about it from Fark instead of say, CNN.

I mean, just wow.

Insert Unfunny Pun Involving Arcade Fire lyrics, Barack Obama and Nouns Involving Voting Here

Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire played a free show last night in support of Barack Obama in Nelsonville, OH, with another set for tonight in Cleveland, OH. These are to drum up support for Obama in time for the Ohio primaries tomorrow. Despite the band being from Montreal, singer William Butler and his brother, bassist William are American citizens by birth (from Texas, who also have their primary the same day as Ohio).

Of course I live nowhere near Ohio, but said primary is the same day as my home state of Rhode Island.

Mumble Mumble Mumble "Chinese Democracy" Mumble Mumble Mumble

the finished masters of Guns 'n' Roses infinitely-long-awaited-to-the-point-of-madness Chinese Democracy were apparently handed over to Geffen Records last month (no, really. Like Chuck Klosterman suspected, Axl spent most of the time mixing and remixing and remixing and remixing and remixing and remixing and cutting songs and remixing and remixing and writing new songs and remixing and remixing and failing to find a guitarist as awesome as either Buckethead or Slash and remixing and remixing) and...nothing's been heard of the record since. According to Rose's mananger they're apparenlty negotiating for release of something. Expect the album, like promised for the past thirteen years to be released on either a cold day in Hell or on Axl's suggestion "sometime in 2012". (I was kindergarten when the album began recording. I'm a college freshman now. I shit you not.).

Vampire Weekend drummer hit by car

Chris Tomson, drummer for Brooklyn-based indie rockers Vampire Weekend was hit by a car in London on Thursday Night after leaving the NME Awards around 12:30 AM local time. The car that hit Thompson sped off, but i'm pretty sure the driver has heard by now as it's all over British news and over every single internet website. Thompson is doing ok, and was discharged yesterday.

There is good news in the band's future, as they will play Saturday Night Live next Saturday according to a post on their MySpace blog with a guest host to be announced during tonight's show.

Ramblings: Yeah, Like That

  • Mike Conley, lead singer of California punk legends MIA was found dead in a Chicago hotel room on February 26 of a massive head wound. The singer was 48.
  • Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher is selling his home in Ibiza because of neighbor James Blunt, apparently, Gallagher is selling the house because according to NME, "he can’t stand living there in the knowledge that Blunt is nearby making terrible music".
  • Warner has pushed the Spike Jonze-helmed adaption of Maurice Sendak's children's book Where the Wild Things Are to October 2009. And they want him to reshoot the entire film because it was "too dark" and "it made children cry during test screenings". With news like this, I hope Jonze doesn't leave the project like he's threatened to (hey, children crying is always a great sign that the films gonna kick ass
